How long does a hearing assessment take?
Out comprehensive hearing assessments take approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your hearing concerns and whether additional testing is recommended. This allows time to discuss your hearing and medical history, examine your ears, complete the assessment, review your results, and answer any questions you may have.
If hearing aids or other treatment options are appropriate, we’ll explain your options and provide personalized recommendations based on your hearing, communication needs, and lifestyle.
Is a hearing assessment painful?
No. A comprehensive hearing assessment is non-invasive and should not be painful. Most tests simply involve listening to a series of tones and words through headphones and responding when you hear them.
As part of your assessment, we’ll also examine your ears using an otoscope to check for earwax or other conditions that may affect your hearing. If any part of the assessment feels uncomfortable, simply let us know and we’ll make any necessary adjustments to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the appointment.
Do I need a referral?
No. You do not need a referral to book a hearing assessment at Salus Hearing & Tinnitus Centre.
Many people choose to have their hearing checked if they’re noticing changes in their hearing, difficulty understanding conversations, or simply want a baseline assessment. If your assessment indicates that further medical evaluation is appropriate, we’ll explain why and can communicate with your family physician or another healthcare provider as needed.
Should I bring someone with me?
Yes, we recommend bringing a family member or friend if possible. Our comprehensive hearing assessment includes a detailed discussion of your hearing, the results of your assessment, and any personalized recommendations.
Having someone with you can help ensure important information is understood and remembered, provide valuable observations about your hearing in everyday situations, and offer support as you consider your options.
If you’re unable to bring someone, don’t worry we’ll take the time to answer all of your questions and make sure you feel informed and comfortable before you leave.
Will I know my results immediately?
Yes. In most cases, we’ll review your hearing assessment results with you during the same appointment.
We’ll explain what the results mean in clear, easy-to-understand language, discuss how your hearing may be affecting your everyday communication, and answer any questions you have.
If recommendations are appropriate, we’ll review the options that best match your hearing, communication needs, and lifestyle so you can make an informed decision without feeling pressured.
